One U.S. Marshal Killed, Two Injured in Elkins Shooting

Three deputy marshals were shot. A deputy and the suspect were killed.

ELKINS -- Authorities with several different law enforcement agencies were called to the scene of a fatal shooting in Elkins.

At about 8:30 a.m. Wednesday, deputy U.S. Marshals were trying to serve an arrest warrant on Charles Smith, 50, at his house on Central Street, according to officials.

When they entered the home, Smith shot one deputy, in the neck. A second deputy was shot in the shoulder with a shotgun. The third deputy received facial injuries from shrapnel from the shotgun, Federal Magistrate Judge John Kaull said.

Authorities say one of three deputy U.S. marshals shot while attempting to serve a warrant in north-central West Virginia has died. The suspect also was killed in the shootout.

U.S. Marshals Service spokesman Dave Oney said the shooting occurred at 8:30 a.m. Wednesday at a residence in Elkins. He didn't have details but confirmed one deputy marshal died and that the suspect was fatally shot at the residence. - Via

3 U.S. marshals shot serving warrant; 1 dead

One of the three deputy U.S. marshals shot Wednesday has died, according to U.S. Marshals Service spokesman Jeffrey Carter.

The officer died from a shotgun blast while serving an arrest warrant in Elkins, West Virginia, Carter said.

One deputy "continues to recover from his injuries," and the third has been treated and released, the spokesman said.

Three deputy U.S. marshals were shot while serving an arrest warrant at a home in Elkins, West Virginia, at about 8:30 a.m. Wednesday, a spokesman for the U.S. Marshals Service said.

Their condition was not immediately known, he said.
