Fixodent May Cause Excessive Nerve Damage

A popular denture cream may be hazardous to be able to your health, according to a good ABC News investigative report. As the result, any class action lawsuit has been filed against Proctor & Gamble, the actual makers of Fixodent, claiming that their product has caused serious, if not debilitating issues to be able to some of their customers.

Chris Cuomo of ABC News' 20/20 interviewed a couple of of the actual former Fixodent customers who are involved together with this lawsuit. Mark Jacoby, 41, of York, Pa. as well as 48-year-old Anne Coffman from Maine are both wheelchair-bound due to be able to the neurological illness that doctors have described as either a "disorder to high levels of the mineral zinc" or zinc poisoning, which interferes along with the body's absorption of copper. Both of these patients as well as their doctors believe their health problems have been caused by the particular zinc inside Fixodent.

But could these health problems have got been avoided? In 2006, the zinc-denture link was created by researchers from the University of Texas. But now the particular study authors are claiming this research was held up for two years because of the actual review by dentist Dr. Kenneth Shay, who claimed the actual study authors "don't understand the actual nature of the actual material they are writing about."

However, ABC News discovered that with the particular time of the particular review, Shay was a paid consultant with regard to Proctor & Gamble. In fact, ABC News obtained exclusive information that states Shay asked the particular authors to "h2o down the study's findings." And inside one e-mail he or she said: "Please be circumspect because, as the reviewer, I'm not supposed to be able to be passing a great unpublished manuscript around."

The actual study was eventually published within 2009, which will be when Proctor & Gamble updated their warning label by cautioning users that "prolonged zinc intake may be linked to be able to adverse health effects."

"I don't know if a person can put a dollar value upon my health or anybody else's, regarding that matter," Coffman told Cuomo. "I would prefer to be able to see [the makers] take the actual zinc right out of the product ... or take the actual product right away from the actual market."
